Tour to Mae Tang Elephant Camp
The Maetang Elephant Park is 45 minutes out of Chiang Mai in the direction of Chiang Dao and the owners are in the process of setting up an elephant hospital to offer veterinarian care for the elephants. At Mae Tang Elephant camp they take a “soft” method to elephant training and the mahouts who are sent to nearby Lampang to be trained to look after the elephants, some of which are fourth generation born in captivity. You can get different views as to whether it is the right route to cure the elephants to keep them in captivity and act for tourists, but elephants have always worked in this area and by foundation the elephant clinic at Mae tang, they will increase the veterinary care of the elephants. Elephants can have health problems, like constipation, caused by eating too many banana branches and insect infestation in their skin which has to be check for every day.
Get out to the Maetaeng area north of Chiangmai to get real close to the elephants at Mae Tang Elephant Camp. Watch the elephants show their feat at the elephant show before embarking on an elephant ride through forest and river up stopping to a Hill tribe village. After Lunch you will try your hand at ox carting before boarding the cane rafts for a leisurely trip down the Mae Tang River.
